Finding a cure is an important issue to many patients with lupus,
their families and friends. Therefore it is a high priority of the
Lupus Alliance of America. This section provides simple summaries
of published research and links or references to the actual research
source.
The
Lupus Alliance of America has pledged $100,000 to the Lupus
Research Institute (LRI) in support of novel lupus research.
The pledge, to be paid over a period of three years, is a substantial
commitment of the Lupus Alliance of America to research. “This
shows the commitment of the Lupus Alliance to lupus research.”
said Thomas Roberts, President of the Lupus Alliance of America
and a member of the LRI’s Board of Directors.
The LRI has
pledged to advance new science for lupus and support only the highest
ranked novel research to improve treatment, to prevent and ultimately
cure lupus.
Changing
the Course of Lupus Research
The LRI supports
only novel research in lupus, encouraging scientists to look at
this disease in innovative, unconventional ways to help move us
beyond what we already know toward finding answers to what we don’t
know. The LRI is flexible, open to all new scientific approaches,
and ready to move rapidly to exploit new advances.
The LRI supports
a broad range of the highest quality research in lupus, all of which
undergoes rigorous peer review. All LRI-funded projects must demonstrate
novelty and a strong hypothesis with significant likelihood of success.
New ideas can come from anywhere, and the LRI is constantly seeking
promising efforts grounded in good science.
The LRI has
in less than two years made remarkable breakthroughs in areas such
as central nervous system lupus, lupus nephritis and genetic implications
for photosensitive lupus.
Lupus organizations
from coast to coast have joined the LRI, partnering with them to
find a cure. The LRI is also working closely with federal agencies,
such as the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration, to make needed advancements a reality.
The Lupus Alliance
of America is committed to excellence in research and advancing
the lupus agenda in all areas of the health care arena. We are proud
to be on the board of directors of the LRI and look with hope to
finding a cure for this debilitating disease.
